When last I visited, LiveJournal was trying to monetize, badly. At the same time they were under constant ddos attack from the Russian govt, because apparently activists use LiveJournal in the USSR. I remember them spreading some ridiculous story about one old lady with a shovel cutting off all the Internet in Russia, and people hyucking it up because LOL Russia LOL outdated morons. Yeah, no. That was purposeful. Occupy was doing similar activism on LJ so they got hit by American-based attacks at the same time. I'm surprised that LiveJournal is still here, to be honest.

Recently I met some of the people who invented LiveJournal. Very nice people. I didn't ask the pertinent questions. They were...they saw themselves as on some kind of mission to liberate the world through Open Source collaborative documents or something. Very intent, very geeky. I didn't know LJ was Open Source? Anyway, very thoughtful dreamer types. Their monetization schemes seemed terrible. I was embarrassed to ask how their idealistic goal squares with asking people to pay extra for more customizable icons and tiny avatars.

Recdit seems to be doing it right with "Reddit Gold " where you pay to add a gold coin symbol to a comment. It works because people genuinely feel they are complimented by the gift, and the Gold features are nifty, and it donates to keep the Reddit servers running. Thus the "Reddit Gold" has percieved, as well as actual, social and economic value.

Just sayin'. LJ doesn't need to reinvent the wheel.

There is a choice of "Mood" setting here, so I went for "predatory" because, really, is that even a mood? I am now making T-Rex noises. Just FYI.

Maybe LiveJournal's programming and UI department is riddled with Dreamwidth supporters and this is their subtle way of advertising for them?

Writer's Block: R.I.P

Oct. 28th, 2011 | 12:54 am

After I die, I want to be taken apart by nature. Like, wolves and birds and worms, I don't want a corpse to tie my spirit to one spot. I want to be sucked deep into the web of life ASAP, be scattered among a thousand bellies.

That being said, it is tempting to be a ghost. I could show up at a slumber. party and move the Ouija board planchette around, tap on the windows, mess with their heads. I could see myself buried under an ornate and creepy tombstone, hanging out by my own grave, waiting for some Goth kids to show so I can spook them.

I think I'd rather do these silly things while I'm alive. Its totally possible. I think it'd be funnier to me while I'm living.

I Drew a Thing!

Seeing if I can upload from my phone. Illustration I drew for Epic, by Seraphwings. It is an awesome AU with Royal Dean and King John and BAMF Castiel and I liked it a whole lot, but I like this scene best. The Dragon Relationship Counselor is in, 5 gold pieces please.

Second Wonder Woman costume photo will make your eyes water

Progress! We ditched the shiny lycra in favor of a richer and thicker material. The boustier is still crinkly. The shiny bits are okay - they almost look right - but the crinkly bodice make it look fake. I'm not a fan of the tiara. I want to own the pants.

Crack Addict has Jones

There was an SPN comment fic challenge all about the crack. It went up about a month ago? Less? I can't remember where it was.

I'm kinda excited about this - Girl Geek Culture

mood: impressedimpressed

This little online mag for Girls of Geekdom has a great future. The 1st article - about the issue of being anonymous and therefore taken for male on the internet - rocked my socks with it's perception and the refreshing lack of whining.

Oh, and I love the name for their project! I wanna befriend anyone who would choose such an awesomely self-aware name.

Seriously, check it out, its good.

Writer's Block: Bold Textured Looks

Dec. 6th, 2010 | 07:15 pm

I don't mix cotton and polyester because GOD COMMANDED IT IN LEVITICUS. Now excuse me, I have some slash fiction about angels to read. *whistles*
What are your rules for mixing different textures of clothing?

the english spell whine as whinge - it looks cool

Oct. 30th, 2010 | 07:27 pm

The English word for whining is whingeing. I dunno if they pronounce the g. I've only ever noticed it in print

Sorry about the bold and visible formatting because I have *almost* no control over it. Cultural oddness tangent: "The English" is how my whole grade school and possibly country refers to British people, which seems to surprise them. Not sure why. Theres this country called England and its aion one island. The Irish never think its surprising when we call them Irish? </p>

We don't think Australians or Irish or Scots or insert colony here are called British either. I think we assume Australia etc revolted, like India, since they don't act like slaves and we figure all colonies are enslaved. Our whole national myth is aboutrebelling against monarchy. But then we tell stories about orphaned princesses to our kids. We actually like royalty, when it comes down to it. We all want to grow up to be king or queen one day. Even though that is patently not how it works.

Funny thing, a lot of Brits seem to think we'd be insulted to be called Yankee when its a solid matter of pride...we do have a baseball team and everything. I think its because when Brits are being rude when they use it among themselves but for Americans its like

A) calling us Brave Warriors of Democracy and b) makes the speaker sound Olde Fashioned - you might as well call us knaves and blackguards. So that totally takes the sting out.

This might sound like I'm saying its right to think these things in these odd little ways but I find American ignorance kinda fascinating. I was raised in it, and its arrogant and idealistic by turns...we wanna police the world and we can't find it on a map.

This is the longest I've gone without a computer since 1994. I am writing this on my phone. Since its a smartphone its pretty good. I can read fic to my hearts content, but I can't really edit it. I tried a few different programs but the best one put *a different Chinese Kanji for every apostrophe* and I just gave up.

When I post here on LJ the cursor slips around uncontrollably. I've had to rewrite quite a few of these sentences. Also I have to insert paragraphs by hand...which with no cursor control is pretty much impossible. I know I look like a tool to the guys over at DCBB. At least I got the banner out before everything crashed utterly. I haven't had access to photoshop and I keep seeing interesting things to draw.

Just saying, I could be a brickmaker in Bangladesh, but I'll moan about not being able to join in a fanfic community.

rec: come down off your throne

Oct. 17th, 2010 | 07:28 pm

This starts out kinda slow, the writing is a little sloppy here and there, but it was a great experience. I found it emotionally affecting and there were some great images and descriptions...just...wow
